* The silver medallist sprinter Raelene Boyle pulled out of the Australian Olympic team for Moscow, citing personal rather than political reasons. Eric McRae, a member of the Australian Olympic Federation's 11-man executive, which voted 6-5 to send a team to Moscow, also dropped out. McRae, president of the Tasmanian Olympic Council, said Australia should not be represented. "I don't believe that the Games should be held in a country at war and an invading nation," he said.
* Three demonstrators were arrested in a wild scuffle with police after the Queen opened the High Court building in Canberra. The clash was in full view of the Queen, who was meeting some of the bewigged and berobed senior judges from 60 countries who were guests at the opening.* Ford Australia announced the retrenchment of 500 workers from its Geelong and Broadmeadows plants. It said stocks of cars were abnormally high in spite of measures aimed at boosting demand.* Train drivers and firemen at Sydney's Eveleigh depot voted to stay on strike, so no country, interstate or interurban trains would run during the day. The sudden strike caused last-minute cancellations of trains and threw services into chaos.* The Manly prop John Gray was suspended for 10 matches, Cronulla's Steve Kneen for eight games and Gary Spears, of Balmain, for four matches. The NSW Rugby League judiciary committee upheld charges of illegal play against all three first-graders.
